Museum Abashiri Prison
An open-air history museum with the theme of "Hokkaido Development and Prison Inmates"
Museum Abashiri Prison is an open-air history museum that preserves and exhibits buildings that have actually been used in Abashiri Prison since the Meiji era. A group of buildings of Abashiri Prison were relocated and restored to the hillside of Mt. Tento, and are preserved and open to the public.
In February 2008, two of the eight buildings (the prison cells, the central guardhouse, the government building, the prison chapel, and the Futamigaoka Prison Branch Office of Abashiri Prison) were designated as National Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
