SPOT
Roadside Station "Kitamaebune Matsumae"
Matsumae Town is the southernmost town in Hokkaido.
It is home to Matsumae Castle, the last Japanese-style castle in Japan, and is known for the 10,000 cherry trees of 250 varieties blooming around the castle, Matsumae pickles, and tuna catches.
Michi no Eki Kitamaebune Matsumae opened in 2009 near Matsumae Castle on the coastline of Route 228.
It is popular as one of the most scenic spots in Hokkaido, with views of the Tsugaru Straits, the Tsugaru Peninsula including Cape Ryubi on the far shore, and Mt.
In 2008, the "Umikaze Terrace" was completed, which is a roadside station that looks out to sea, and is used by many visitors to Matsumae-cho as a place where they can feel even closer to the sea.
Inside the building, local specialties such as processed marine products, authentic Matsumae pickled vegetables, and sweets are sold, and the "Umikaze Shokudo" (restaurant), which is located next to the station, offers locally caught tuna, sea urchins from Maehama depending on the season, fruit pork from the adjacent town of Kaminokuni, and ramen noodles made with Hokkaido wheat and a chemical-free soup. The restaurant also offers ramen noodles made with Hokkaido wheat and a soup made without chemical additives.
