Asushimoi no Sato

This is a guide to the filming location of the drama/movie "Suzuran".

Suzuran" was filmed on location twice, in December 1998 and May 1999, with many of the cast of "Suzuran" visiting Numata and many Numata town residents cooperating as extras.
The first location shooting took place in cold and snowy conditions, focusing on scenes in front of the station street in the Taisho and early Showa eras.
The second location shooting focused on scenes of people getting on and off the SL in the early Showa period.

Ebishima Station, which became the "Asumo" station.
Moe", the main character of "Suzuran", is picked up by the station master at a small station (a fictional station) called Asumoe, and overcomes various adversities to grow up.
The story takes place at Ebishima Station on the JR Rumoi Main Line. Ebishima Station was chosen because the railroad line is a straight line to nowhere. The reason was that there are no modern things around the station that should not have been there in the early Showa period, and the square and road in front of the station have the atmosphere of a main street.
The actual Ebishima Station was reconstructed in September 1907, and later demolished in November 1986, leaving the station unmanned with a simple station building converted from a slow train. For the filming of the drama, the simple station building was covered with old timber, and the early Showa period station building was recreated next to it for the drama.
