Monument to the birthplace of Japan's frozen food business
On August 25, 1920, Ippei Kuzuhara, a resident of Yamaguchi Prefecture, paid attention to the abundance of fish along the coast of Mori, and built Japan's first frozen food factory with the latest equipment in a port town where there were hardly any houses at the time.
Frozen fish at that time included tuna, yellowtail, squid, mackerel, and sardines, which were shipped to Tokyo in the following decade.
In September 1969, a monument was erected to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the company's founding.
The refrigerating machine, which has been in service for half a century, was designated as a cultural property of Mori Town (No. 2) on September 1, 1973, in recognition of its historical value, and has been carefully preserved.
