Horinji Temple
This Soto Zen temple was built in 1862, and still retains the prosperity of the herring fishermen during the heyday of the herring fishery. Each of the latticework ceilings has different paintings of flowers, birds, landscapes, people, and the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac. It is said that a traveler who stopped by the temple in the middle of the Meiji period (1868-1912) spent many days painting these pictures. It may be hard on the neck to look up at them, but please take your time to view them.
