"Lake Akan's Marimo" is designated as a special natural treasure of Japan and cannot be easily seen in its natural state nowadays. At the "Marimo Exhibition and Observation Center" located on Chu-Urui Island in Lake Akan, visitors can observe and learn about the ecology of Lake Akan's marimo. Visitors can view the marimo through an underwater camera installed in the marimo colony, as well as closely examine the actual marimo in an aquarium that is reminiscent of the bottom of the lake. Chuului Island can be reached by sightseeing boat or motorboat.
