The hand bath that originated at Lake Akan
In Lake Akan Onsen town, there is a place that is said to be the birthplace of hand baths, which have now spread all over the country. One of these hand baths, next to Katosato Folk Crafts Shop, is a rock-carved hot spring basin. Nearby, in front of another folk craft shop, Kankodo, is the Owl Hand Bath, which stores hot spring water in a hollow in an elm tree. The name "Owl" comes from the Hokkaido spotted owl, the guardian deity of the kotan.
