Mount Hakodate Observatory

An observation deck that offers a panoramic view of Hakodate city and the surrounding area. The unique topography, surrounded by the sea on both sides, creates a view that can be enjoyed to the fullest, especially the night view that sparkles in the crisp air. The wind is strong, so be sure to take precautions against the cold even outside of winter. There is a restaurant on the second floor and a tea lounge on the third floor, so you can enjoy the spectacular view while eating and drinking.

The building has a four-story structure, with the ropeway's summit station and waiting lobby on the first floor, a restaurant and event hall on the second floor, a tea lounge on the third floor, and a rooftop observation deck on the top floor. It's also conveniently located just three minutes by ropeway from the ground. There is also a mountain climbing bus that departs from JR Hakodate Station. The vehicle trail is open from mid-April to early November. During that time, there are restrictions on private and rental cars during night view hours.

Mount Hakodate was founded on ejecta from an undersea volcano about 1 million years ago, and after repeated ups and downs caused by subsequent eruptions, it emerged as a large island. It was eroded by ocean currents and wind and rain, becoming an isolated island, and the sediment that washed away accumulated to form a sandbar, and about 5,000 years ago it became connected to Hokkaido (a land-tied island). The peak was eroded away by fortification construction during the Meiji period, and it took on its current form.

After the war, Mt. Hakodate, which had been a fortress area, was opened to the public for the first time in about 50 years, and an observation deck was opened at the summit in 1953, and a ropeway linking the base and summit opened in 1958. A new 125-seater gondola was introduced in 1988, and the observation deck was renovated in the autumn of 2015, just before the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen, allowing visitors to enjoy the view in even greater comfort.
