SPOT
Hakodate Mountain Observation Deck
An observation deck from which Hakodate City and its surrounding area can be overlooked. A view created by the unique topography, surrounded by the sea on both sides, especially a night view sparkling in the crisp air, can be fully enjoyed. The wind is strong, so even outside of winter, cold weather measures should be thorough. There are also a restaurant on the 2nd floor and a tea lounge, etc., on the 3rd floor, so the superb view can be enjoyed along with food and drinks.
The building has a 4-story structure, and on the 1st floor are the ropeway's summit station and waiting lobby, on the 2nd floor are a restaurant and event hall, on the 3rd floor are a tea lounge, etc., and the top floor is the rooftop observation deck. The convenience of being 3 minutes by ropeway from the ground is also a welcome point. In addition, a mountain climbing bus starting from in front of JR Hakodate Station is also operated. Passage on the mountain road for vehicles is possible from mid-April to early November. During that period, private cars and rental cars have traffic restrictions during night view time.
Mount Hakodate, approximately 1 million years ago from now, became a foundation of ejecta from a submarine volcano, and after that, repeatedly uplifting and subsiding due to eruptions, it appeared as a large island. It was eroded by ocean currents and wind and rain, becoming an isolated island, and the flowed-out earth and sand accumulated, forming a sandbar, becoming connected to Hokkaido approximately 5000 years ago (a tied island). The pointed summit was cut down by fortification work during the Meiji era, becoming its current shape.
After the end of the war, Mount Hakodate, which had been a fortified zone, began to be opened to the public for the first time in approximately 50 years, and in 1953 (Showa 28), an observation deck was established on the summit, and in 1958 (Showa 33), a ropeway connecting the foot of the mountain and the summit commenced operation. In 1988 (Showa 63), a new gondola with a 125-person capacity was introduced, and in the autumn of 2015 (Heisei 27), ahead of the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen, the observation deck was renovated, making it possible to enjoy the view even more comfortably.
