SPOT
Hakodate Park
This park was created by local citizens in 1879 (Meiji 12) at the foot of Mount Hakodate, which is covered in lush vegetation. It also has a mini amusement park and animal breeding facilities, and is a popular spot for families to enjoy cherry blossom viewing in the spring, autumn leaves in the fall, and splashing around in the water in the fountain plaza in the summer. It is one of the earliest urban parks established in Japan, and is a precious place that has retained its original appearance to this day. It has been designated a National Registered Cultural Property, a Registered Monument (Place of Scenic Beauty).
Hakodate Park is also known as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot. Over a five-year period starting in 1889 (Meiji 22), a local merchant, Koemon Itsumi, personally planted 5,280 cherry and plum trees. Currently, there are approximately 400 cherry trees, mainly Somei Yoshino.
The park is hilly, so you can enjoy the flowers from both high and low vantage points. During cherry blossom season, the park is decorated with lights at night, and street stalls are set up, attracting many visitors. In autumn, the cherry blossoms, azaleas, maples, and other trees turn beautiful reds, creating a picturesque combination with the colorful Mount Hakodate.
The park has a fountain plaza, a museum, a mini amusement park called "Kodomo no Kuni" (amusement ride facility), an animal breeding facility, and many other historical buildings and monuments, so it is recommended for a leisurely stroll or for enjoying with the family.
