SPOT
Hakodate Park
Hakodate Park was created by citizens in 1879 at the foot of Mount Hakodate, which is covered with lush vegetation. Hakodate Park, which also has a mini amusement park and animal breeding facilities, is crowded with families enjoying cherry blossom viewing in spring, autumn leaf peeping in fall, and playing in the water at the fountain plaza in summer. It was one of the earliest urban parks established in Japan, and is still a valuable reminder of its original appearance. It is designated as a registered national cultural property (a place of scenic beauty).
Hakodate Park is also known as a cherry blossom viewing spot. 5280 cherry and plum trees were planted by a local merchant, Koemon Itsumi, over a period of 5 years from 1889 (Meiji 22). Today, approximately 400 cherry trees, mostly Someiyoshino, are planted.
The park is attractive because of its undulating terrain, allowing visitors to enjoy the flowers from both high and low points of view. During the cherry blossom season, the park is decorated with electric lights at night and lined with stalls, attracting many cherry blossom-viewing visitors. In the fall, the cherry blossoms, azaleas, maples, and other trees turn beautiful colors, creating a picturesque backdrop to the colorful Mt.
The park has a fountain plaza, a museum, a mini amusement park "Kodomo no Kuni" (ride-on amusement facility), animal breeding facilities, and many historical buildings and monuments, making it a great place for a leisurely stroll and family fun.
