Shidemai Bridge
This European-style bridge spans the lowest reaches of the Kushiro River and is one of the three most famous bridges in Hokkaido, along with Toyohira Bridge in Sapporo and Asahi Bridge in Asahikawa. At twilight, Kushiro Port is dazzling in the setting sun, and at night, the bridge is lit up and the lights of the city illuminate the river. In summer, the shadows of the bridge and street lights floating in the fog are fantastic.
The Shidemai Bridge, which connects the south and north of Kushiro City, was completed in 1976 and is the fifth generation of the bridge. The four corner pillars were left in place at the request of the citizens, and bronze statues symbolizing "spring, summer, fall, and winter" were placed on the child pillars in the middle of the parapets, which were created with donations from the citizens.
This symbol of Kushiro's urban area has a wide variety of expressions, and can be enjoyed either by walking across or looking at it.
