Wakkanai City Karafuto Memorial Museum

Karafuto (present-day Sakhalin) was originally land inhabited by indigenous peoples such as the Ainu, and Japanese people and Russian people also lived together.
That Karafuto's area south of 50 degrees north latitude, the so-called "South Karafuto," was a period when it became Japanese territory for 40 years, from Meiji 38 (1905) after the end of the Russo-Japanese War, until Showa 20 (1945) when the Pacific War ended.
In Wakkanai City, along with historical materials of Wakkanai and Soya, Karafuto-related materials were collected, and in Heisei 29 (2017), a donation of Karafuto-related materials amounting to 2,000 items was received from the General Incorporated Association National Karafuto Federation, and in May, Heisei 30 (2018), the "Wakkanai City Karafuto Memorial Museum" opened inside Wakkanai Fukukō Market (2nd floor).
At the Wakkanai City Karafuto Memorial Museum, based on these valuable materials, the appearance/lives of Karafuto after Meiji and the people who lived there are being introduced, so please do stop by.
