Wakkanai Sakhalin City Sakhalin Memorial Museum
Sakhalin (now Sakhalin) was originally a land inhabited by the Ainu and other indigenous peoples, with Japanese and Russians also living there intermingled.
South of 50 degrees north latitude of that Sakhalin, the so-called "southern Sakhalin," was Japanese territory for 40 years from 1905, after the end of the Russo-Japanese War, to 1945, when the Pacific War ended.
Wakkanai City collected materials related to Sakhalin as well as historical materials on Wakkanai and Soya. In 2017, Wakkanai City received a donation of 2,000 items of Sakhalin-related materials from the National Sakhalin Federation, and in May 2018, the Wakkanai Karafuto Memorial Museum was opened in the Wakkanai Vice Port Market (2nd floor).
The Wakkanai Karafuto Memorial Museum introduces Karafuto and the people who lived there since the Meiji era based on these valuable materials, so please stop by.
