Wakkanai Port North Breakwater Dome
Wakkanai has 130 days a year when strong winds blow. The half-arched dome was built over a period of five years to serve not only as a breakwater for Wakkanai Port, but also as a transfer passage from the pier to the station. At 14 m high and 427 m long, its 70 massive pillars, reminiscent of ancient Greek architecture, and gently curving corridor create a novel impression as an architectural structure unlike any other in the world. This place used to be crowded with people crossing over to Karafuto. It is designated as a Hokkaido Heritage Site and is also known as a location for TV commercials.
