Noboribetsu City Local Museum and Noboribetsu City Cultural Heritage Center
The Noboribetsu City Local Museum exhibits natural history materials such as old daily life tools and Sakhalin fir carbonized by the eruption of Mt. Kuttara, materials related to the Katakura family retainers of the Sendai Domain who moved to Noboribetsu City after 1869 (Meiji 2), and materials related to Ainu culture.
The building's exterior is modeled after Shiroishi Castle, where the Katakura family of the Sendai Domain resided. Surrounded by cherry blossoms such as Gyoiko and autumn leaves, visitors can enjoy the seasonal scenery.
46 cherry trees of 6 varieties bloom over a month, delighting visitors. Among them, the rare Gyoiko cherry tree, with its pale green petals, is particularly popular.
