Noboribetsu City Local History Museum and Noboribetsu City Cultural Heritage Museum
The Noboribetsu City Local History Museum exhibits daily tools from the past, natural history materials such as Abies sachalinensis charred by the eruption of Kuttara volcano, materials related to the Katakura family, a clan of Sendai feudal lords who immigrated to Noboribetsu City after 1869, and materials about Ainu culture. In addition, the Cultural Heritage Center offers hands-on learning once a month.
The exterior of the building is modeled after Shiroishi Castle, where the Katakura family of the Sendai han (feudal domain) resided, and the surrounding area offers seasonal scenery with cherry trees such as Goyo and other cherry trees and autumn leaves.
Forty-six cherry trees of six varieties bloom over the course of a month, delighting visitors. Among them, the rare Gyoikou cherry trees with light green petals are especially popular.
