Otaru City Museum Canal Hall

Learn about "Otaru"

The history and natural environment of Otaru, nurtured by its beautiful and rich nature and the interaction of its vibrant people, are introduced through an exhibition of approximately 20,000 items from the museum's collection.

The museum is housed in the "Former Otaru Warehouse," a city-designated historical building built in 1893. The first exhibition room displays old photographs and maps that record the Kitamae Ship, herring fishery, and changes in the town, and the second exhibition room displays natural materials on plants and animals. The Canal Pavilion was opened in July 2007.

The Canal Museum, which had been open as the Otaru City Museum until July 2007, was reborn as a branch of the Otaru City Museum when the Otaru City General Museum opened. Visitors can enjoy the atmosphere of the historically valuable architecture and contemplate the history of Otaru, which prospered as a commercial city.
