Female Akan Mountain

Mt. Meakan is the main peak of the Akan Mountain Range located southwest of Lake Akan. It is an active volcano with an elevation of 1,499m, and from its gentle and feminine appearance, it has been called "Machineshiri ~Mountain of Women~" in the Ainu language. There are 3 hiking trails: the Akan Lakeside Course (round trip average 5 hours 10 minutes) where you can enjoy forest bathing mainly consisting of Sakhalin spruce and Sakhalin fir while enjoying the view that suddenly opens up, and furthermore, the Meakan Onsen Course (round trip approximately 4 hours 10 minutes) which has a shorter course time and a somewhat steep climb but offers good views, and the Onneto Course (round trip 4 hours 50 minutes) where you can enjoy flower fields of alpine plants such as lingonberry, crowberry, and rock bellflower. On the way on all of them, many alpine plants can be seen, including "Meakan Kinbai" and "Meakan Fusuma" which are named after Mt. Meakan, and at the summit, the scenery unique to an active volcano constantly emitting volcanic smoke entertains the eyes of hikers. The best season for hiking is from June to October.
