Memu Lily of the Valley Habitat
The wild lily of the valley habitat, located in Memu, Biratori Town at the foot of Mt. Poroshiri in Hidaka-Sankei Erimo Tokachi National Park, spans approximately 15 hectares, boasting the largest area in Japan. This area was once a pasture where military horses were grazed freely. The horses, knowing that lily of the valley is poisonous, left them uneaten.
Afterward, the 'Suzuran Festival' was held and the area was opened to the public, but due to over-picking and trampling, it was brought to a state near extinction after 1975, and public access was prohibited. Since then, conservation efforts have been made, and over many years, it has been restored to a state close to its peak.
The lily of the valley was designated as the town flower, viewing paths were established within the habitat, and thorough management has been implemented. Currently, we are working on environmental conservation by expanding the viewing paths, developing photo spots, and with the cooperation of volunteers, and the area is open to the public only during the period from late May to early June.
We hope that everyone will come to see the lovely, strong, and beautiful lily of the valley that we are proud of, and spend a relaxing time.
The habitat in Biratori Town features a native Japanese species of lily of the valley (whose flowers are hidden under the leaves), which is beloved for its quiet, neat, and lovely appearance.
The flower language of such a lily of the valley is 'return of happiness' and 'purity'.
