Koboro Station
Now let's go to "the most unexplored station in Japan".
In the limited space of only 80 meters between tunnels, there is "Kohoro Station," which is called the most unexplored station in Japan. There are no houses or roads leading to the outside. Why is there a station in such a place?
In fact, this place was originally established as a signal station for trains to pass each other. Later, it was upgraded to a passenger station when JR was inaugurated, as there were fishermen who settled in the area. However, as the months passed by, no one lived around Kohoro Station, and the number of daily users of Kohoro Station dropped to almost zero. Finally, in 2015, JR Hokkaido notified Toyoura Town of its intention to discontinue operation of Kohoro Station. In response, many people visited Kohoro Station, the most unexplored station in Japan, to mourn its closure. The town of Toyoura also asked for the station's continuation, claiming that it would be maintained and managed by the town as a base for tourism promotion. In this way, Koboro Station was spared from closure, and even today it is visited by many railroad fans as an active unexplored station.
