Let's go and experience the excitement of railways and science
The Otaru City Museum Main Building preserves and exhibits 50 of Hokkaido's most famous railway cars, including the steam locomotive "Shizuka."
There is a permanent exhibition introducing the history of Hokkaido Railway. Inside the museum, there is a planetarium and a science exhibition room where you can learn through experiences, and on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays you can do simple experiments and crafts in the Challenge Lab. In addition, the special exhibition room holds exhibits based on various themes such as history, nature, and science.
The former Temiya Railway Facility "Locomotive Depot No. 3," an important cultural property, is now open to the public. For a limited time, you can also experience a ride on a Meiji-era mixed passenger and freight train pulled by the Iron Horse, Hokkaido's oldest preserved steam locomotive.
