At the Otaru City General Museum Main Building, 50 railway vehicles representative of Hokkaido, including the steam locomotive 'Shizuka-go,' are preserved and displayed.
There is a permanent exhibition introducing the history of Hokkaido's railways. Inside the museum, there is a planetarium and a science exhibition room where visitors can learn through hands-on experiences. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, simple experiments and crafts can also be enjoyed at the Challenge Lab. Additionally, the special exhibition room holds displays based on various themes such as history, nature, and science.
The Important Cultural Property, the Former Temiya Railway Facilities 'Engine Shed No. 3,' is open to the public. Also, for a limited time, visitors can experience a ride on a Meiji-style mixed passenger and freight train pulled by the Iron Horse, the oldest operational steam locomotive in Hokkaido.
