Okhotsk Village
A sanctuary for animals protected and nurtured by the villagers
Okhotsk Village is a 34-hectare area of nature-rich forest managed by the Koshimizu Nature and Talk Society, a group established by local residents.
The primary objective of the Koshimizu Nature Talks Association is to "preserve the forest.
The young forest, nurtured by a fisherman in the past, is now being nurtured and nurtured by human hands to grow as a forest. By preserving the forest, the animals will remain, and the forest can also be used as a place for nature education for children.
The village of Okhotsk is currently home to many wild birds such as the red-headed woodpecker, black woodpecker, Siberian sparrowhawk, and shorebirds, as well as animals such as Ezo sika deer, Ezo squirrel, Ezo flying squirrel, Ezo flying fox, and many trees, mainly Yachidamo, birch, and larch that were planted in the past, including Mizunara oak and alder, grow naturally in the area.
In addition, the generational change of the trees that were planted in the past is in progress, and the huge biotope is now in the transitional stage from planted forest to natural forest, and is about to sublimate into a natural forest with the help of time and people. Walking along the walking paths that wind through the forest, one can hear the chirping of wild birds and rustling of trees overhead, and see traces of wildlife everywhere on the ground.
