Kamikokuji Temple Main Hall
The oldest temple building in Hokkaido that supported the religious world of Katsuyama-kan
Kamikokuji Temple Main Hall is said to have been built around 1560 (Eiroku 3) according to Edo period records, and the temple existed during the Muromachi period.
The present main hall is believed to have been built in 1758, the oldest existing temple building in Hokkaido, based on the inscription "Horeki Hachitora-doshi" written in ink on the ceiling of the inner sanctuary (naijin).
The temple was originally affiliated with the Shingon sect of Buddhism, but was converted to the Pure Land sect in the mid-Edo period (1603-1868), and remains so to this day.
The main hall underwent semi-demolition and repair between 2008 and 2011 under a government-subsidized project by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and the inner sanctuary was restored to its appearance in 1769, the year when it was most well maintained.
