Hokkaido University Museum
Free public viewing of 10,000 academic materials in an authentic reinforced concrete building from the early Showa period
The Hokkaido University Museum is a free museum located a 10-minute walk from the north exit of Sapporo Station. The museum is housed in the main building of the Faculty of Science, which was built in 1929 and used as the main building of the Faculty of Science until 1999. The museum is full of highlights, including a huge skeletal specimen of an adult male Holstein and a life-size model of a mammoth. In addition to viewing specimens, visitors can tickle their curiosity in a variety of exhibits, such as the "Feeling Exhibition Room," where they can touch specimens with their hands, an exhibit of a seismograph that catches vibrations by lightly kicking the floor with their feet, and the "Museum Lab," where they can catch a glimpse of research in action. Furthermore, the July 2016 renovation has increased the number of exhibits that showcase the education and research of the 12 faculties, and a new museum café serving light meals and alcoholic beverages has been established.
