SPOT
Maruyama Park
A primeval forest, a natural monument, and one of Sapporo's most famous cherry blossom viewing spots.
A recreational spot for Sapporo citizens, especially in early May and June, the park is crowded with visitors to the Hokkaido Jingu Festival. Originally a tree experiment station set up by the Hokkaido Development Commissioner in the early Meiji period, it was developed into a park from the end of the Meiji period to the Taisho period (1912-1926).
The park's vast grounds are equipped with sports facilities such as the Maruyama Baseball Stadium, Maruyama Stadium, and Sakashita Ground, and together with the adjacent Hokkaido Jingu Shrine, Maruyama Zoo, and the Maruyama Primeval Forest, designated as a natural monument, the park serves as a center of recreation and sports culture. The park is also home to a cedar forest and large katsura trees that retain remnants of the testing grounds, and if you look carefully, you can observe many squirrels, wildflowers, and wild birds.
The park has long been famous for its cherry blossoms, and approximately 160 cherry trees, including Ezoyama-zakura and Someiyoshino cherry trees, are planted within the park.
