Maruyama Zoo
Enjoy learning about the ecology of animals♪
Maruyama Zoo opened in 1951 as the first zoo in Hokkaido. The zoo's origins can be traced back to the popular mobile zoo held in Sapporo by Tokyo's Ueno Zoo, which opened the Polar Bear Pavilion in March 2018 and the elephant house in March 2019, and new facilities are being created one after another.
At the Polar Bear Pavilion, visitors can watch polar bears swim dynamically through an underwater tunnel. The pool is divided into polar bears and seals, and if the timing is right, you may be able to see the polar bears go after the seals.
The Elephant House, which opened in March 2019, is a facility where visitors can learn about the adorable parent and child elephants and their ecology. The exciting mechanisms are a hot topic of conversation not only for children but also for adults. Don't miss the indoor watering hole where you can watch elephants swim right in front of you. There are many attractions such as exhibits that allow visitors to learn about ecology in a fun way and a touch theater.
In addition, there is the "Asia Zone," where you can see cute red pandas, Amur tigers, and other popular animals, as well as about 30 different daily guides where you can learn about animals in a fun way. The "Orangutan and Borneo Forest" is scheduled to open in the spring of 2024.
