Maruyama Zoo

Have fun learning about the ecology of animals!

Maruyama Zoo opened in 1951 as Hokkaido's first zoo. Its origins lie in the fact that a traveling zoo from Tokyo's Ueno Zoo was held in Sapporo and was well-received. The Polar Bear House opened in March 2018, and the Elephant House in March 2019, and new facilities are being built one after another.

In the "Polar Bear House," you can watch polar bears swimming dynamically through an underwater tunnel. The pool is divided into polar bear and seal areas, and if you time it right, you might even be able to see the polar bears targeting the seals.

The Elephant House, which opened in March 2019, is a facility where you can learn about the adorable appearance and ecology of mother and baby elephants. It is a hot topic for its exciting features that will excite not only children but also adults. The indoor water area where you can see the elephants swimming right in front of you is a must-see. There are many things to see, such as exhibits that teach you about ecology in a fun way and a touch theater.

In addition, the Asia Zone has a wide selection of popular animals such as cute red pandas and Amur tigers, and there are about 30 different daily guided tours where you can learn about animals in a fun way. "Orangutans and the Borneo Forest" is scheduled to open in the spring of 2024.
