Hokkaido University Field Science Center for Northern Biosphere, Botanical Garden
The undulations of the land remaining in the park are a primitive landscape, 4,000 living specimens of Hokkaido
The second oldest botanical garden in Japan, built in 1886 (Meiji 19). The trees still remain today. Kingo Miyabe, a botanist who was a second-year student at Sapporo Agricultural College, was ordered to plan the establishment of a botanical garden in 1883, and collected the trees on a trip to collect plants in Hokkaido starting in June of the following year. One such tree is the guimatsu, which is said to have been brought back from the Kuril Islands, which he crossed on a boat he happened to be on when he stopped in Nemuro. The Kaitakushi (Hokkaido Development Office) Museum, the oldest museum building still in use in Japan, is also a highlight. In the "Northern Folk Museum," which exhibits materials on the Ainu people, a silent film of the "Bear Festival," a ceremony to send off the spirit of a bear, filmed in Asahikawa in 1935, is shown. It is an extremely valuable exhibition material that allows visitors to see the sacred ceremony on video.
