Tengu Iwa
Overview
Like Kumai Iwa, this strangely shaped rock can be seen on the right when heading toward Aidomari from Rausu. It is a work of nature's art, carved by rough waves over a long period of time.
Perhaps it is named after the nose of a tengu, which looks like it is looking heavenward.
Some of you may have seen it as it was the location for the TV drama "Kitano Kuni Kara 2002 Kokoromi (Legacy from the North 2002)".
The road from Rausu to Aidomari on Highway 87 is a rare driving course where you can feel the unspoiled nature of the farthest reaches of the earth and the lifestyle of the people who live there. Be sure to head to the dead end at Aidomari and enjoy the natural formations such as Tengu Iwa, Kumai Iwa, and Seseki Falls.
