The name Shiraoi is said to have come from the Ainu word "Shirauoi," which means "a place with many horseflies."
Shiraoi Town is located in the southwestern part of Hokkaido, almost in the center of the Iburi Subprefecture. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the south, Noboribetsu City to the west, Chitose City and the Otaki Ward of Date City (formerly Otaki Village) to the north, and Tomakomai City across the Bebetsu River to the east. The town has an area of approximately 425.64 km² and stretches long from east to west. About 75% of its area is covered by forests, making it a tranquil town blessed with diverse nature, including the sea, rivers, mountains, and forests.
The climate in Shiraoi is mild, with cool summers and not much snowfall in winter. You can enjoy the rich scenery woven by its abundant nature in spring and autumn, and appreciate the various expressions of each season.
