A town of matchmaking trees and the white cliffs of Shirafura

Population:3,100
Otobe is a town located in the western part of the Oshima Peninsula, near the center of the Hiyama Subprefecture. Its primary industries are agriculture and fishing, but in recent years, it has also been focusing on attracting businesses, mainly in the manufacturing sector.
The town features several distinctive capes that run through it, including the white chalk cliffs of "Shirafura," the "Tate-no-misaki" cape, also known as the Grand Canyon of the East for its beautifully patterned geological strata, and the "Shibi-no-misaki" cape with its columnar joints, designated as a Natural Monument of Hokkaido.
National Route 229, which runs along the coastline, is a popular driving and touring course. This single road connects the beautifully sculpted capes, allowing travelers to enjoy their natural beauty, which is enhanced by the sunset over the Sea of Japan.
Other popular spots include the over 500-year-old "Enkatsura" tree, where two katsura trees are joined together at a height of about 7 meters and have been cherished as a dwelling place for a matchmaking deity. There is also the "Umi-no-pool" (Sea Pool) beach at Genna-dai Seaside Park, which is the only beach in Hokkaido to be selected for the Ministry of the Environment's "100 Best Bathing Beaches.
