Kutchan is a town rich in nature, surrounded by Mt. Yotei, also known as "Ezo Fuji" for its resemblance to Mt. Fuji, and the Niseko Mountain Range, with Niseko Annupuri as its main peak. The clear Shiribetsu River flows through the town.
In summer, outdoor sports such as rafting on the Shiribetsu River, cycling at the foot of Mt. Yotei, mountain climbing, and golf are popular. In recent years, the number of long-term visitors who spend the cool summer here has also been increasing. Agriculture is also thriving, utilizing the abundant underground water from Mt. Yotei to grow potatoes, melons, and asparagus.
Having made a "Town of Skiing Declaration," Kutchan is a mecca for skiing, also known as the "St. Moritz of the East." In winter, many skiers and snowboarders from not only Japan but all over the world visit to enjoy the high-quality powder snow.
