Peak Bloom is Here! See the Stunning Tulips of Early Summer at Takino Suzuran Hillside Park!

Takino Suzuran Hillside National Government Park offers different sights and activities to enjoy with each changing season. This time, we'll introduce the flowers that color the park in early summer. With so many charming, picture-perfect flowers to see, why not plan a visit?

The "Tulip & Lily of the Valley Festa" is being held from May 14th to June 5th. A stunning 169 varieties and 260,000 bulbs of tulips cover the vast Country Garden.

The tulips are arranged by color or in beautiful gradients. They are a delight to see both up close and from a distance, with the peak viewing period from May 20th to the end of May. For reference, when we visited (May 16, 2022), they were about 30-40% in bloom.

Takino Suzuran Hillside Park boasts a massive 400-hectare area, so be sure to check in advance which entrance is closest to your destination. The Chuo (Central) Gate and Higashi (East) Gate are nearest to the Country Garden.

Near the Higashi (East) Gate, you'll find the Palette Flowerbed, planted with highly fragrant tulips. As you approach the circular flowerbed, you'll immediately notice their unique scent.

The park's namesake, the lily of the valley (suzuran), blooms a little later than the tulips, around June. Don't miss these delicate flowers, so characteristic of Hokkaido!

Additionally, in the Takino Forest Zone, the "Shirane-aoi & Spring Wildflower Festival" is running from May 8th to May 22nd. Enter through the Takino Forest Entrance and first pick up a leaflet at the Forest Information Center.

The Shirane-aoi (Glaucidium palmatum) is called the "Queen of the Alpine Flowers" for its large size and beautiful purple hue. Looking at it, you can certainly feel a sense of nobility, can't you?

The Takino Forest Zone has a Shirane-aoi Path, and as you stroll along, you'll find clusters of Shirane-aoi here and there. Seeing them in their natural state brings a special kind of joy when you spot them.

In the Takino Forest Zone, you can also see other spring wildflowers like Hitorishizuka (Chloranthus japonicus). With a leaflet in hand, try to find all the different flowers in bloom.

We've also captured our walk through the park to see the tulips and Shirane-aoi in a video, so please take a look if you'd like!

As the season progresses, the peak blooming times for flowers change rapidly. Why not check the park information on the official website before you go to find the plants you want to see?
