Hokkaido's oldest wisteria tree! The overwhelming beauty of Sapporo's "Tenjin Wisteria
The wisteria tree, with its gentle purple flowers, soothes the hearts of Japanese people. Did you know that the oldest wisteria tree in Hokkaido is located in Sapporo? Its breathtaking power and beauty are worth seeing!
The oldest wisteria tree in Hokkaido is located in Tenjinyama Ryokuchi in Toyohira-ku, Sapporo. There is a gate leading to the wisteria trellis along Route 453, just outside the parking lot of Tenjinyama Ryokuchi.
Supported by a magnificent iron fence, wisteria flowers are in full bloom all overhead. The best time to see the flowers is from late May to early June, and at the time of the interview (May 24, 2022), most of the flowers seemed to be in bloom.
The life force of the wisteria tree that produces such a large number of flowers is breathtaking. Witnessing the trunk and branches growing as if intertwined with each other, it seems as if they give strength to those who see them.
Wisteria is endemic to Japan, but in fact does not grow wild in Hokkaido and Okinawa. These wisteria trees were brought in from outside the prefecture and replanted by our ancestors who settled here in the Meiji era (1868-1912).
In 1969, the mayor of Sapporo at that time visited this area and named it "Tenjin wisteria" after Mt. The tree was said to be 150 years old at that time, so it is now more than 200 years old!
The wisteria trellis, which stretches about 25 meters square, can be viewed either from directly below or from the Japanese garden on a slightly elevated site.
Find your favorite viewing point and admire the wisteria. You will be overwhelmed by the beauty of the wisteria, and at the same time, you will be encouraged by its powerful appearance!
