The wisteria tree, with its soft purple flowers, soothes the hearts of Japanese people. Did you know that the oldest wisteria tree in Hokkaido is located in Sapporo? Its breathtaking power and beauty are definitely worth a visit! The oldest wisteria tree in Hokkaido is in Tenjinyama Green Space in Toyohira Ward, Sapporo. Just a short distance from the parking lot of Tenjinyama Green Space, along National Route 453, there is a gate leading to the wisteria trellis.

Supported by a sturdy iron fence, wisteria flowers bloom all over the sky. The best time to see them is from late May to early June, and at the time of our visit (May 24, 2022), most of the flowers seemed to be in bloom.

Even so, the vitality of the wisteria tree that can produce so many flowers is simply amazing. When you see the trunk and branches growing and entwining with each other, you feel as if they are giving strength to the viewer as well.

Wisteria is a species endemic to Japan, but it does not grow naturally in Hokkaido or Okinawa. This wisteria tree was brought from outside Hokkaido by pioneers who settled there during the Meiji period and then replanted.

In 1969, the mayor of Sapporo at the time visited this area and named it "Tenjin Fuji" after Tenjinyama. At the time, the tree was said to be 150 years old, so it is now over 200 years old!

The wisteria trellis, which measures approximately 25 meters square, can be viewed from directly below or from the Japanese garden, which is located on a slightly elevated spot.

Why not find your favorite viewpoint and enjoy the view? You'll be overwhelmed by its beauty, but you'll also be sure to be energized and inspired by its powerful presence!
