The wisteria tree, with its gentle purple blossoms, has a special place in the hearts of the Japanese. But did you know that the oldest wisteria tree in all of Hokkaido is right here in Sapporo? Its breathtaking power and beauty are a must-see!

Hokkaido's oldest wisteria tree is located in Tenjinyama Green Space in Toyohira Ward, Sapporo. Just a short walk from the park's parking lot, you'll find a gate along National Route 453 that leads to the wisteria trellis.

Supported by a magnificent iron fence, the wisteria flowers bloom in a stunning canopy overhead. The best time to see them is from late May to early June. When we visited (May 24, 2022), most of the flowers were already in full bloom.

The sheer life force of this wisteria tree, capable of producing such a vast number of flowers, is simply sigh-inducing. Witnessing its trunk and branches twisting and reaching out, you can't help but feel a sense of empowerment.

While wisteria is a species native to Japan, it does not grow wild in Hokkaido or Okinawa. This particular tree was brought from outside Hokkaido and replanted by pioneers who settled here during the Meiji era.

In 1969, the mayor of Sapporo at the time visited this spot and named it "Tenjin Fuji" (Tenjin Wisteria) after Tenjinyama. It was said to be 150 years old back then, which means it is now over 200 years old!

The wisteria trellis, spanning approximately 25 square meters, is a sight to behold. You can enjoy it from directly underneath or from the Japanese garden located on a small hill nearby.
