Kutchan Town

Ever since I discovered the nut butter made and sold at Pyram Organics & Plants, a shop in Kutchan, Hokkaido that sells organic foods by weight and houseplants, I can't stop enjoying it on my morning toast and post-dinner ice cream! Let me introduce you to the "nut butter" that has been brightening up my meals lately.

A Total of 8 Varieties. Freshly Ground Nut Butter You Squeeze Yourself

Pyram Organics & Plants sells carefully selected organic ingredients like nuts, dried fruits, grains, and spices by weight, starting from small quantities. Nut butter is one of their offerings, and in the store, you can use a special grinder to make as much as you like. They offer six types of nut butter—pistachio, nuts, macadamia, almond, and cashew—and occasionally feature limited-time versions mixed with chocolate.

All products are completely additive-free, making them an excellent source of high-quality plant-based fats for vegetarians, serving as a "butter substitute." Spread it on bread (it's also great mixed with honey), add it to ice cream, or give your sweets an extra touch. The possibilities are endless as it can be used in various dishes.

Return your empty jar after use and get ¥100 back! It's standard practice to bring your own jar to fill.

Which Nut Butter is Your Favorite?

They are all delicious, have a long shelf life of about 6 months, and can be stored at room temperature, making them convenient to take home—they're simply the best. But if you were to ask which one I'm particularly hooked on, it would be the fragrant 'Pistachio Butter,' made from a well-balanced blend of raw and roasted pistachios. It also happens to be the most popular item in the store.

And the owner, Mr. Konagai's top recommendation is the 'Macadamia Butter.' He says it's no exaggeration that he started the shop because he wanted to eat this butter to his heart's content (lol). "It's rich in oil, has no strong smell, and its texture is the closest to butter. You'll be filled with happiness if you eat it on tangy sourdough bread with honey," says Mr. Konagai.

They are all delicious, but I hope you find your number one favorite.

Besides the self-fill option, they also offer pre-packaged jars. These can be found not only at Pyram Organics & Plants but also at 'ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM' in Obihiro, and in Sapporo at 'suu', 'licht', 'hotaru des hotaru', and 'jojoni'.

Additionally, at the coffee shop 'sprout' next door to Organics & Plants, you can enjoy peanut butter cookies and seasonal baked goods made with pistachio butter. They are also available for purchase at their online store. I highly recommend you dive into the world of nut butter.
