Mountainman: An Outdoor Restaurant with a Secret Address, Hosting a "Forest Dinner" Only on Fridays and Saturdays
From Indoors to Outdoors Mid-Course. Dishes with a Live Cooking Feel
A succession of dishes cooked on the outdoor wood-fired station appeared: tomatoes and cheese, zucchini topped with a pink beet miso, and juicy turnips grilled with Ricotta Salata cheese butter. The fresh vegetables, picked from the garden behind the restaurant, were exquisite!

The sixth course was Ayu (sweetfish), first cured with kombu seaweed, then steamed in white wine and pan-fried until the skin was crispy, served with fukinoto (butterbur sprout) butter. Then came "Raccoon Tacos" with rhubarb jam and yacon pickles. The main course was a meaty "Sautéed Brown Bear" with a haskap berry sauce. To finish, a "Risotto" made with raccoon broth.
For dessert, a refreshing "Coconut Melon Sorbet" with a red shiso sauce, reminiscent of a sophisticated melon au lait. And finally, we all enjoyed "toasted marshmallows," sandwiched between biscuits!
A wide selection of wines, from Hokkaido vintages to international labels.
Starting in a stylish, Portland-like restaurant and moving to the wood deck mid-course to gather around a wood-fired cooking station is a truly unique dining experience. It's packed with the kind of charm that's only possible in Hokkaido.
It's about a 10-minute walk from Makomanai Station along a forest path, or a taxi ride of about 1,000 yen. You can enjoy a walk through the mountains on your way, or take a 25-minute taxi ride from Sapporo Station. A mountain restaurant just 30 minutes from central Sapporo. Mountainman is full of a charm that photos and words alone cannot convey. Why not pay it a visit?
