Forget the Race! What is this "Unofficial Commentary" That Only Covers the Charms of the Hokkaido Marathon Course?
The Hokkaido Marathon 2023, one of Hokkaido's signature summer full marathon events, is just around the corner! But rumor has it there will be an unusual "unofficial commentary" that completely ignores the race and focuses solely on the attractions along the course. What could it possibly be about?
What is the Hokkaido Marathon 2023?
The Hokkaido Marathon is the only full marathon in Japan held in the summer. Completing the race within the strict 5-hour time limit has become a badge of honor, attracting many runners from outside Hokkaido and even from overseas.
At the starting point in Odori Park, about 20,000 runners start all at once, signaled by the countdown on the Sapporo TV Tower's digital clock. Along the route, crowds of Sapporo citizens gather to cheer on the runners, who can enjoy scenic spots like the Hokkaido University campus and the Former Hokkaido Government Office Building (Akarenga) as they run through the heart of Sapporo.

An "Unofficial Commentary" That Only Talks About the Course?!
The person behind this rumored unofficial commentary is Satoru Wada, a city-walking researcher who shares the fun of Sapporo and Hokkaido's geography and history through various media. While he usually shares his insights across different platforms, this time he will be live-streaming an unofficial commentary explaining the course on his YouTube channel, "Bura Satoru Channel."
Mr. Wada, known by the nickname "Bura Satoru," also appeared on the Sapporo episode of the original "Bura Tamori" TV show.
It's a truly "unofficial" commentary that never touches on the race itself, instead focusing entirely on the highlights and historical backstories of the course! What kind of broadcast will it be? We got a comment from Mr. Wada himself.
This year's course is a condensed package of Sapporo's most interesting aspects, including the wisdom of its urban planning, traces of its battles with topography and water, and surprising anecdotes.
