Sapporo Kissaten Tour (3): A Visit to Dorothy, a Tranquil Spot with Views of the Sosei River, Famous for its Perfected Napolitan
A Coffee Shop with a Classical Atmosphere
Staff member Yuka Sato, who is in charge of cooking and dessert recipes.
The name "Dorothy" was inspired by the name of a fictional cat, and you'll find cat figurines and illustrations scattered throughout the shop. This playful touch blends seamlessly with the atmosphere of a good old-fashioned coffee shop, complete with classical tables, shelves, and lampshades. Located on the first floor of an office building that has stood on the east side of the Sosei River for over 50 years, the building's age adds to the retro ambiance.
The "Mont Blanc Toast" is 950 yen with a drink set. Available until 11:00 AM.
The shop offers a morning menu from 9 AM to 11 AM, featuring a variety of toast dishes available only during this time. The bread used is from the famous Okameya bakery in Nishi-ku, Hassamu. To preserve its moist and soft texture, the bread is warmed rather than toasted in an oven.
A recommended item is the "Mont Blanc Toast," which features a generous topping of diplomat cream (a mix of custard and whipped cream) on the bread. The light flavor of the egg and cream is a perfect match for the bread. A sprinkle of crumble (a fine mixture of nuts and other ingredients) adds a delightful crunchy texture.
The Owner's Masterpiece: A Meticulously Perfected Napolitan
"Napolitan" 900 yen
Although it's a sister shop to Kissa Kotori, known for its omurice, the menu is different. The star at Dorothy is undoubtedly the Napolitan. According to the owner, "I had planned to serve it at Kotori, but I couldn't get the flavor just right. I've spent a long time carefully refining the recipe."
Order the Napolitan with a drink and dessert for a 100 yen discount on each.
The spaghetti used is 2mm thick (thicker than the common 1.6-1.7mm), and it's rested overnight after boiling to achieve a chewy texture. The homemade tomato sauce is simmered down to concentrate its flavor. Instead of sausages or bacon, homemade pancetta (salt-cured pork belly) is used, adding a concentrated meaty umami as an accent. The pasta and sauce are thoroughly pan-fried until sizzling, which brings out a wonderful aroma. With just one bite, the umami of each ingredient intertwines perfectly, creating an irresistibly rich and deep flavor.
The Signature Pudding: A Classic Firm-Style Texture
"Pudding" with a generous topping of whipped cream, 550 yen.
The dessert menu is also popular, featuring items like a seasonal monthly "Tart" and a rich "Basque Cheesecake." Among them, the "Pudding" is particularly captivating. Made with an egg mixture high in whites, plus plenty of fresh cream and milk, it's a classic firm-style pudding with beautifully sharp edges. One bite fills your mouth with its firm texture, the addictively bittersweet caramel sauce, and the rich aroma of milk. Its mild sweetness makes it a perfect match for coffee.
A Relaxing Space with Soothing Sunlight from the Windows
In spring, you can also enjoy the view of the cherry blossom trees.
Dorothy was created with the aim of being a "jun-kissa" (a traditional coffee shop), not just a "retro coffee shop." The owner's desire to create an atmosphere that is welcoming to everyone reflects the sentiment, "I wanted to do here what I couldn't fully achieve at Kissa Kotori."
The tables were custom-made to resemble those in old-fashioned coffee shops, creating an atmosphere indistinguishable from the originals.
The lunch menu is full of tempting options, including the "Kissaten's Mackerel Set Meal" (1,150 yen, limited to 10 per day), "Curry Doria" (1,030 yen), and "Butter Chicken Curry" (950 yen). The shop is popular with a wide range of customers, from office workers on their lunch break to young women. Whether you drop by on a whim or come for a fulfilling lunch, the charm of Dorothy is that you can enjoy it in your own way.
