Esashi Town

Seagull Island" in Esashi Town is a small island connected to the mainland by a breakwater. With a circumference of 2.6 km and an elevation of about 30 m above sea level, it looks as if it is protecting the town of Esashi. Kamome-jima is truly a symbol of Esashi, and there are various historical spots on the island, so why not take a walk around it?

You can walk across to Kamome-jima Island, which is connected to downtown Esashi. Moreover, it takes only about an hour to walk around the island, so it is a good distance for sightseeing.

Kamome Island is one of several cultural assets included in the Ezashi Town story "May in Ezashi is not Edo: A town where herring thrive," which was recognized as a Japan Heritage Site in 2017, and there are several cultural assets scattered throughout the island. For example, as soon as you enter the island, what immediately catches your eye is a large rock and a red torii gate sitting in the sea.
It is a huge rock called "bottle rock" that appears in the "Orii legend" passed down in Esashi. The 30-meter-long rope is said to be hung by young fishermen in the town during the "Kamome-jima Festival" held every July.

Stepping into the interior of the island, visitors will see a small shrine, Itsukushima Shrine, which was built in 1615. Along with the hand-watering stone and the stone torii gate in the precincts of the shrine, this is another cultural asset.
Other cultural assets can be found here and there, such as the ruins of a staircase and the remains of a banquet hall for Esashi merchants. Many people may not notice them because they are so naturally located here. If you are interested in history, we recommend that you do some research beforehand.
In the open area at the top of Kamomejima, there is the "Seagull Island Lighthouse," which is not a cultural asset but is a popular photo spot.

A new project is now underway at this location. It is called "Seagull Island Marine Ping. A 6-meter-diameter domed tent has been set up next to the lighthouse, where visitors can enjoy a marine experience while glamping.
