Scenic Hiking to Ariake no Taki: A Beautiful Waterfall Splashing Over Black Rocks

Sapporo is home to several scattered waterfalls. This time, we'll introduce Ariake no Taki Waterfall in Kiyota Ward. Although it's a bit difficult to access without a car, it's just a short walk from the parking lot, making it enjoyable for the elderly and small children.

Ariake no Taki is located within the Ariake no Taki Nature Observation Forest along Hokkaido Prefectural Road 341. For Sapporo residents, it might be easier to picture its location by knowing it's near Takino Suzuran Hillside Park. There is a parking lot, so driving is recommended. Look for the small sign that says "Ariake no Taki Entrance."
As you enter the Ariake no Taki Nature Observation Forest from near the information board, you'll find the walking path to be well-maintained and easy to walk on. As the name "forest" suggests, it's lush with trees in the summer. Walking through the sun-dappled woods feels like a true hiking experience, perfect for some forest bathing. There are also guide signs at key points, which is reassuring.
After a 10 to 15-minute walk, you'll come to a staircase leading down to a mountain stream. Once you descend these stairs, Ariake no Taki will come into view. It is a graceful waterfall with a drop of 13 meters, trickling finely down the rock face.
While the beauty of Ariake no Taki is captivating, the surrounding nature is also fascinating. The moss growing on the rock beds and fallen trees, in particular, seems to draw viewers into a world of tranquility where time stands still.
After you've had your fill of the waterfall, you can either climb the stairs back to the parking lot or continue exploring the Ariake no Taki Nature Observation Forest. However, be aware that while the distance from the parking lot to the waterfall is about 600 meters, the total length of the forest trails is about 7 kilometers, with some steep inclines and declines along the way. Bears have also been spotted in the area, so proper preparation is necessary.
If you just want to see Ariake no Taki, it's one of the most accessible and recommended waterfalls in Sapporo.

In the summer, just being there can feel refreshingly purifying, making it a potentially unique date spot.
