This week, in our fourth week, we're excited to announce the second giveaway in our collaboration between Pippu Town and Domingo! What is 'Winter Strawberry Jam'?

This luxurious jam captures the deliciousness of Pippu's 'Benihoppe' winter strawberries, which are slowly ripened to a deep red in greenhouses during the cold winter.

This strawberry jam is sold at NANA PLAZA, a direct sales shop run by five farmers in Pippu Town.

The jam will be delivered with a limited edition EXIT version label, which was sold during the "Naepoyo Area Buchiage Revitalization Tour," a collaborative project between Pippu Town, Pip Co., Ltd., and the comedy duo EXIT!

The Making of 'Winter Strawberry Jam'

Freshness is key for strawberries.
The people at NANA PLAZA felt it was a waste to throw away surplus strawberries that were still perfectly ripe. So, they set up a system to harvest the strawberries at their peak and process them into jam.

The strawberries used in this jam are the 'Benihoppe' variety, grown in greenhouses during the winter.

This is the third year of cultivating 'Benihoppe' strawberries. This initiative began as an effort to continue the history of Pippu strawberries for years to come.

The 'Benihoppe' strawberries grown by the members of NANA PLAZA are cultivated in this greenhouse.

This variety has a good balance of sweetness and acidity, and the harvest season in Pippu Town is from late December to around the end of May.

These winter strawberries are planted in August. Careful control of temperature and water is essential for them to grow deliciously.

NANA PLAZA is also involved in an agriculture-welfare collaboration.
This "Agri-Welfare Collaboration" addresses two challenges: the labor shortage in agriculture and the difficulty for people with disabilities to achieve financial independence. They commission tasks such as harvesting and weeding.

About NANA PLAZA, the Producer and Seller of Winter Strawberry Jam

We spoke with Mr. Kitagawa from NANA PLAZA.

NANA PLAZA

NANA PLAZA is a direct sales shop that opened in August 2018, started by a group of five farmers from Pippu Town with the mission to "share delicious food from Pippu."

The idea came about when this location became vacant.

"We thought it was a great spot and that we could do something fun here, so we just started."

Located along National Route 40, it's a prime location easily visible to passing cars. The shop was created by five like-minded farmers of the same generation.

Here's a look at the unique interior, typical of a farmer-run shop.

Interior of NANA PLAZA

"I was worried if a mini truck would fit through the entrance, but it did, so we designed the interior like this for selling our produce. It used to be a convenience store, but we renovated everything ourselves, including the walls and counters, to create the shop."

They also sell Pippu Town's specialty rice varieties, 'Yumepirika' and 'Nanatsuboshi,' and especially their 'Specially Cultivated Rice,' which Mr. Kitagawa and his colleagues have painstakingly grown with great care.

In season, they also sell locally harvested vegetables like strawberries and corn, as well as fresh produce sourced from farmers in neighboring municipalities.

Additionally, they offer a full takeout menu, including smoothies and soft-serve ice cream made with local Pippu strawberries, and rice balls made with their delicious rice.

The Domingo editorial team also visited the shop and found it to have a very homey atmosphere, filled with the farmers' passion, making us want to try all the different vegetables!
