What is "Winter Strawberry JAM"?

This is a luxurious jam that tightly captures the deliciousness of Pippu's winter strawberry "Benihoppe," which is slowly grown red in a greenhouse in the middle of winter.

This strawberry jam is sold at NANA PLAZA, a direct sales store run by five farmers in Pippu Town.

It will be delivered in the limited EXIT version label that was sold at the " Depressed Area Revitalization Tour ", a collaboration between Pippu Town, PIP Co., Ltd., and EXIT!

How "Winter Strawberry Jam" is made

Freshness is key when it comes to strawberries. The people at NANA PLAZA thought it was a waste that strawberries were thrown away even after they were ripe to eat, so they harvested the strawberries while they were still delicious and prepared a system to process them into jam. This strawberry jam is made using "Benihoppe" strawberries grown in greenhouses during the winter.

This marks the third year that the "Benihoppe" strawberry has been cultivated. It began as an effort to continue the history of Pippu Strawberry.

This variety has a good balance of sweetness and sourness, and in Pippu Town, the harvest season is from late December to the end of May.

The seedlings for these winter strawberries are planted in August. By carefully adjusting the temperature and water, winter strawberries will grow deliciously.

NANA PLAZA is also working to collaborate with the welfare sector. "Agricultural-welfare collaboration" solves the problem of a shortage of workers in the agricultural industry and the problem of people with disabilities and others finding it difficult to become economically independent in the welfare field. Apparently they are hiring people to do harvesting and weeding work.

What is NANA PLAZA, the company that produces and sells winter strawberry jam?

We spoke with Kitagawa-san from NANA PLAZA.

Nana Plaza

NANA PLAZA is a direct sales store that was opened in August 2018 by five farmers from Pippu Town, with the aim of "distributing delicious ingredients from Pippu."

The reason for opening this store was that this location had become vacant. "The location is nice and it seemed like we could do something interesting, so we started it." Located along National Route 40 and easily visible to people driving by, the shop was created by five farmers of the same generation who shared the same aspirations. Here is the interior design unique to a direct sales store created by farmers.

"We were worried whether a pickup truck would fit through the entrance, but we managed to fit it in, so we designed the interior like this and are now selling here. It was originally a convenience store, but we changed everything, including the walls and counters, and created the store ourselves." They also sell varieties such as "Yumepirika" and "Nanatsuboshi," which are specialties of Pippu Town, and in particular the "specially cultivated rice" that Kitagawa and his team have painstakingly produced.

In addition, when in season, they also sell vegetables such as strawberries and corn grown in town, as well as fresh vegetables purchased from farmers in neighboring cities and towns. There is also a wide selection of takeaway menu items available, such as smoothies and strawberry soft serve made with local Pippu strawberries, and rice balls made with delicious rice.

The editorial team at Domingo also had the opportunity to visit the store, and it had a very homey atmosphere filled with the farmers' passion, making it a place that made you want to try a variety of vegetables!
