Hokkaido Literature Museum
From the Ainu people to children's literature. Learn about the current trends in Hokkaido literature.
The Hokkaido Literature Museum opened in 1995 as Hokkaido's first comprehensive literature museum, thanks to the enthusiasm of people involved in the literary field. Located in Nakajima Park, which is dotted with cultural facilities, the museum houses and exhibits approximately 260,000 items related to writers and their works in Hokkaido, including Takuboku Ishikawa, Takeo Arishima, Takiji Kobayashi, and Ayako Miura. The collection covers the literature of Hokkaido from the mid-19th century to the present, including novels, critiques, essays, poems, tanka, haiku, willow, children's literature, and the oral literature of the Ainu people. The permanent exhibition, which displays approximately 1,300 items, introduces representative writers and their works by period, allowing visitors to understand the flow of literature in Hokkaido at a glance. The exhibition also includes personal belongings of the writers, including a must-see letter by Takeo Arishima, who is considered the father of Hokkaido literature.
