Toyohirakan
The first guest was the Emperor Meiji. An exchange facility where visitors can enjoy wooden Western-style architecture and the history of Sapporo.
Toyohaikan is the only hotel built by a Meiji government agency and opened in 1881 when the Meiji Emperor visited Sapporo and Hokkaido. It is a representative wooden Western-style building of the early Meiji period, built with traditional Japanese techniques, and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Built near the current Odori Park 1-chome, it was moved to its current location in Nakajima Park in 1958. After serving the citizens of Sapporo as a wedding hall, it was reopened as an exchange facility in June 2016 after conservation and repair work was completed. Inside the Toyohirakan, visitors can enjoy architectural highlights, such as the plaster ceiling centerpiece at the chandelier's suspension, as well as a reproduction of the guest room where the Meiji Emperor stayed and a video about the history of Toyohirakan.
