Toyohirakan

The first guest to stay at the inn was Emperor Meiji. This is a facility where you can enjoy wooden Western-style architecture and the history of Sapporo.

The Hoheikan is the only hotel built by a Meiji government institution, and opened in 1881 when Emperor Meiji came to inspect Sapporo and Hokkaido. It is a typical example of a Western-style wooden building from the early Meiji period, constructed using traditional Japanese techniques, and is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. It was built near the current Odori Park 1-chome area, and in 1958 was moved to its current location in Nakajima Park. After being popular with Sapporo residents as a wedding hall, it underwent preservation and repair work and reopened as a social facility in June 2016. Inside the Hoheikan, in addition to architectural highlights such as the plaster ceiling centerpiece at the base of the chandelier, visitors can enjoy a replica of the guest room where Emperor Meiji stayed, as well as videos related to the history of the Hoheikan.
