SPOT
Nakajima Park
Despite being in the city center, the nature-rich Nakajima Park is truly an urban oasis. Why not forget your daily routine and spend a relaxing time at this spot where you can enjoy cherry blossoms and wisteria in spring, yellow irises in summer, and beautiful autumn leaves in fall? Another one of its features is the presence of a nationally designated Important Cultural Property within the park. Strolling while experiencing its history is also recommended.
With wisteria in spring, lush greenery in summer, and autumn leaves in fall, the scenery changes with each season, making you want to visit again and again. There is Shobu Pond in the park, where you can ride a boat from late April to early October. It is nice to be able to enjoy the water birds and the seasonal scenery. In winter, you can experience cross-country skiing (ski equipment rental is free), and the fantastical 'Yuki Akari' event is held, where snow lanterns line the paths.
Having a Japanese garden is another feature of Nakajima Park. You can spend a healing time in a Japanese-style space with the sound of flowing water. Here, you will find the 'Hasso-an' teahouse, designed by the Edo-period tea master Enshu Kobori. You can view the exterior of this precious building, which is also a nationally designated Important Cultural Property.
Standing out prominently within Nakajima Park is the 'Hoheikan,' the only hotel built by the Meiji government and a precious example of Kaitakushi (Development Commission) architecture. The building, constructed as a hotel from the Meiji to the early Taisho period, was later used as a public hall and a wedding venue.
