Hokkaido Nature Park Nopporo Forest Park
A forest spreading over a large city, a rarity in Japan, where the primitive Hokkaido remains.
Designated as a "Hokkaido Nature Park" in 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Hokkaido. The 2,053 ha site stretches over the hills of Nopporo, which straddle the three cities of Sapporo, Ebetsu, and Kitahiroshima. It is one of the few flatland forests in Japan that are located in the suburbs of a large city, yet still retain a large area of forest. About 80% of the park is state-owned forest, and it is a wildlife sanctuary. In 1977, the park was designated as a "Showa Forest Natural Recreation Forest" to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Showa Emperor's reign.
