Hokkaido Kaitakunomura
A vast 54-hectare open-air museum that tells the story of Hokkaido in the Meiji and Taisho eras
Located in Nopporo Forest Park, the "Hokkaido Kaitakunomura" is an open-air museum established to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Hokkaido. Historical buildings that convey the industries, lifestyles, and culture of the Hokkaido pioneer period (Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa eras) have been relocated and restored from all over Hokkaido, and are preserved. The village is divided into four areas: urban area, farming village, mountain village, and fishing village, and the scenes of those days are reproduced so that visitors can feel as if they were in Hokkaido more than 100 years ago. We recommend taking the horse-drawn wagon train in summer and the horse-drawn sleigh in winter. Visitors can also experience pioneer culture by making traditional playground equipment or taking a straw craft workshop. The winter-only "Winter Life Experience" is a great opportunity to learn about the harsh winter lifestyle of the pioneer era.
