Hokkaido Museum

The Hokkaido Museum is a collection of Hokkaido's history, nature, and culture.

The Hokkaido Museum unravels the nature, history, and culture of Hokkaido from a "Northeast Asian perspective". The Naumann elephant came from Honshu and the mammoth elephant came from the continent through Sakhalin. The exhibition begins with reconstructed whole-body skeletons of two types of elephants that once inhabited Hokkaido. Many models of traditional Ainu crafts, as well as bird's-eye views and dioramas from the early Showa period, can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages and nationalities. Visitors can also touch real fossils and enjoy the hands-on participatory device of creating Ainu sentences passed down orally. Multilingual explanation boards are provided for the exhibits, and audio guides in six languages are available for rent.
