Arata Hongo Memorial Sapporo Sculpture Museum
A quiet and passionate museum where emotions overflowing from the sculptures stir the heart
Arata Hongo (1905-1980) is one of Japan's leading sculptors from Sapporo. His outdoor sculptures, which number approximately 80, have been placed in various locations throughout Japan. The museum has a collection of over 1,800 items, including sculptures, plaster casts of open-air sculptures, and a vast amount of drawings and other materials left by Hongo. The prototype for the "Ice and Snow Gate" (Cenotaph for Sakhalin Islanders) in Wakkanai Park in Wakkanai City emits such energy that each finger, like a living creature with emotions, cries out its elusive heart and seems as if it is about to move.
