Sadatonogoro

Sadatonogoro, the oldest lighthouse in Hokkaido, was built in 1857 at the foot of the main shrine of Ota Shrine, one of the five sacred places in southern Hokkaido, where the worship hall is now located. The tides were swift off the coast of Ota, and especially in winter, there was no end to the number of ships being wrecked by strong winds and waves. The people of the Ota area therefore built the "Tei Doton" and placed it on the cliff to protect the safety of their boats. The lantern is made of bronze, 1.3 m high and 40 cm wide, and is made so that the characters "Ota" (umbrella), "Ta" (lantern), and "San" (base) appear from the top to the bottom, and "Ota-yama" (Mt. Ota) from all sides. The original lantern was completely destroyed in 1887 due to wave damage, and the current one was restored in 1988 for the first time in 131 years. Cape Ohana can be seen offshore from the lantern. The contrast between the steep granite mountains and the azure blue of the Sea of Japan makes it a photo spot where visitors can take pictures of the cape on the beautiful coastline.
