Daisenkendake (mountain climbing)
Overview
The highest peak in the southwestern part of the Watashima Peninsula at 1,072 m above sea level, one of Japan's top three mountains and one of the 100 most famous mountains for flowers, and the first mountain with a first class triangular point in Hokkaido in 1896 (Meiji 29). Komagatake and Mt. Hakodate, as well as Okushiri Island and Watashima Oshima Island in the Sea of Japan, and even Mount Hakkouda and Mount Iwaki in Aomori Prefecture across the Tsugaru Straits. Also, in 1693, 106 people were martyred in the execution of hidden Christians by the Matsumae clan, and a cross was erected at the site of the Kanayama guard station and on the ridge of Senken-daira. A Christian martyrdom mass is held on the last Sunday of July every year.

■Bus: Take the Hakodate Bus bound for Matsumae from "Kikonai Eki-mae" and get off at "Senken". 40 minutes.
