Mount Asahi
Mount Asahi, the highest mountain in Hokkaido at 2,291m above sea level, has been selected as one of the "100 Famous Mountains of Japan." Located on the northern side of Daisetsuzan National Park, it has a wide plateau and is home to a rich variety of alpine plants.
Although the climbing season is short, from late June to early October, the scenery of nature changes dramatically in such a short space of time, making for a truly breathtaking sight. The alpine flowers, which reach their peak towards the end of July, paint the ground beneath your feet in a colorful array of colors, creating a truly paradise-like landscape known in the Ainu language as "Kamuy Mintara" (the garden where the gods dwell).
It is known as the place where autumn leaves change color earliest in Japan, and from mid to late September, the leaves start to change color in the Sugatami area and move day by day to Asahidake Onsen. During this time, many tourists visit Daisetsuzan National Park to see the magnificent colors.
