SPOT
Asahidake (旭岳)
At 2,291 meters above sea level, Asahidake is the highest mountain in Hokkaido and has been selected as one of the "100 most famous mountains in Japan. Located in the northern part of Daisetsuzan National Park, it has a wide plateau zone and a rich variety of alpine flora.
Although the climbing season is short (from late June to early October), the rapidly changing natural scenery is breathtaking, with alpine flowers peaking in late July and colorfully decorating the ground beneath one's feet, creating the paradise known as "Kamuimintara" (the garden where the gods dwell) in Ainu language.
It is known as one of the earliest places in Japan to see the autumn leaves, which can be seen from mid to late September, starting from the Sugatami area and moving day by day to Asahidake Onsen. During this season, many tourists visit Daisetsuzan National Park to see the majestic colors of the leaves.
