SPOT
Daisetsuzan Asahidake Ropeway
The Asahidake Ropeway is a popular tourist spot where you can easily visit Mt. Asahidake, the highest mountain in Hokkaido, and enjoy an approximately 10-minute aerial journey. It operates throughout the year (*except during inspection periods) and guides you to the dynamic four seasons of the Daisetsuzan mountain range. It can carry up to 101 people at a time, and you can appreciate the panoramic view of the Daisetsuzan mountains from the cabin window.
From July to August, various alpine plants bloom, attracting hikers who can enjoy trekking in the cool climate. In the latter half of September's Silver Week, many tourists from both Japan and abroad visit to catch a glimpse of the peak autumn foliage from the ropeway cabin. In winter, rare natural phenomena such as diamond dust and sun pillars may appear, and there are many photographers who aim to capture that moment.
■ Skiing & Snowboarding
Mt. Asahidake is known for its vast world of silver snow and high-quality powder snow, attracting skiers and snowboarders from all over the world to enjoy mountain skiing. The Asahidake Ropeway also operates during the winter season, taking skiers up to 1,600 meters as a substitute for a ski lift.
In mid-winter, temperatures can drop to -20°C, and while the weather conditions are harsh, it is a place that has gained immense support from outdoor enthusiasts who can enjoy the light, fluffy snow and beautiful natural phenomena like diamond dust and sun pillars.
