SPOT
Asahidake Ropeway in Daisetsuzan
The Asahidake Ropeway is a popular tourist spot that allows you to easily visit Asahidake, the highest mountain in Hokkaido, and enjoy a 10-minute aerial stroll. It operates all year round (subject to inspection periods) and guides you through the dynamic four seasons of the Daisetsuzan mountain range. Up to 101 people can ride at a time, and you can enjoy a panoramic view of Daisetsuzan from the window.
From July to August, various alpine plants bloom, and the cool climate makes trekking enjoyable, attracting climbers, while in the latter half of Silver Week in September, many tourists from Japan and abroad visit to catch a glimpse of the peak of autumn leaves from the train window. In winter, rare natural phenomena such as diamond dust and sun pillars can appear, and many photographers try to capture these moments.
■ Skiing and snowboarding
Asahidake is known for its expansive white world and high-quality powder snow, and skiers and snowboarders from all over the world come to enjoy mountain skiing. The Asahidake Ropeway is also in operation during the winter, taking skiers up to 1,600m instead of the ski lift.
In the middle of winter, temperatures can drop to minus 20 degrees Celsius, and although the weather conditions are harsh, the place is extremely popular with outdoor enthusiasts who can enjoy the light, fluttering snow and beautiful nature such as diamond dust and sun pillars.
