Former British Consulate in Hakodate (Port Opening Memorial Hall)

Built in 1913 (Taisho 2), it was used as the consulate until 1934. It was renovated in 1992 and opened to the public as a port opening memorial hall. It underwent a complete renovation in 2009 to mark the 150th anniversary of the port's opening. With an emphasis on hands-on exhibits, the consul's office and family room have been recreated to look just like they did when they were used by the third consul, Richard Eusden, and visitors can sit in the chairs and touch the furnishings (with some exceptions).

At the Port Opening Museum, you can learn about the history from Perry's arrival to the opening of the port through panels. You can also look through a scope in a wooden barrel placed inside the museum to see the changing townscape and enjoy watching videos of foreigners dancing uniquely to music.

The 2023 renovation will see a complete overhaul of the tea room and shop on the first floor. A new "Princess Photo Space" has been added to the first floor, with bright red chairs and robes, and a replica of the tiara actually worn by Queen Elizabeth II. The rose garden in the courtyard, which is home to 153 roses of 60 varieties (as of July 2018), is in full bloom from late June to early August each year. You can visit the garden without entering the Port Opening Memorial Hall.
