SPOT
Old Hakodate Post Office (Hakodate Meijikan)
A massive red-brick building that was built as the Hakodate Post Office in 1911 (Meiji 44). Privatized as a commercial facility from Showa 58, it is currently being utilized as a shopping mall.
"Hakodate Meijikan," which plays a part in the bay area where you can enjoy strolling and shopping simultaneously, is one of the popular spots that appears almost certainly on sightseeing courses. What has become its trademark is the ivy that grows as if creeping along the exterior wall. From spring to summer, the green of the leaves and the red of the bricks create a unique contrast, and in autumn, when the leaves turn red, it is dyed a dazzlingly vivid red color. And then, in winter, it shines with a unique brilliance in the snowscape, and so on, evoking a unique presence throughout the year.
