Former Hakodate Post Office (Hakodate Meiji-kan)

A massive red brick structure built in 1911 as the Hakodate Post Office. It was privatized as a commercial facility in 1983 and is now used as a shopping mall.

Part of the bay area where visitors can enjoy strolling and shopping at the same time, the Hakodate Meiji-kan is one of the most popular spots that always appear on the sightseeing course. One of its trademark features is the ivy that crawls along the outer wall. In spring and summer, the green leaves and red bricks create a unique contrast, and in autumn, when the leaves turn red, they turn a dazzlingly bright red. And in winter, it creates a unique presence throughout the year, standing out in a snowy landscape.
